The SIM registration process catches travellers off guard, though. India runs a strict KYC regime, and a tourist SIM in Bengaluru takes longer to activate than almost anywhere else in Asia, sometimes a few hours, occasionally up to 24. Then there's the gap between the city core and the outskirts. Coverage thins out. Once you're past Electronic City heading toward Hosur, or out near Nandi Hills, signal gets patchy. Power cuts still hit older Bengaluru neighbourhoods, which means your hotel WiFi can blink out even when cellular is fine. Keep a backup data plan ready.

Three carriers matter in Bengaluru: Jio, Airtel, and Vi (Vodafone Idea). Jio has the widest 5G footprint. Their rollout was aggressive, and you'll see real speeds (often 200+ Mbps) across central Bengaluru, the Outer Ring Road tech corridor, and Whitefield. Airtel runs close on coverage and is marginally more reliable for voice calls. That matters if you use your number for OTPs and verification, and in India, you will. Everything from Uber to Swiggy demands an Indian number for SMS auth. Vi is the budget pick, fine in the city core but noticeably weaker once you head toward Devanahalli or Bannerghatta. BSNL exists. Skip it. For the airport, Whitefield, Koramangala, Indiranagar, and MG Road, all three majors work well. Speeds in Bengaluru typically beat what you'd get in Delhi or Mumbai during peak hours, likely because the network was built for the IT crowd.

Hotel, airport, and cafe WiFi in Bengaluru is generally fast and generally insecure. Same as anywhere. The risk isn't dramatic. But it's real. Open networks let anyone on the same network see unencrypted traffic, and Bengaluru's cafe scene (Third Wave, Blue Tokai, Matteo around Indiranagar and Koramangala) is full of laptops belonging to people who know what they're doing.
